‘Orthopaedics’ involves any injury, impairment or structural deformity of the musculoskeletal system. For physiotherapists, it involves the fitting and use of:
- Support braces – for shoulders, wrists and ankles
- Range of motion braces – for knees and elbows
- Walking boots/CAM boots – for higher grade ankle sprains or fractures
- Casting (waterproof fibreglass casts)
For splinting or casting following a fracture you will require referral from your treating doctor or orthopaedic surgeon.
Injuries we deal with:
- Joint sprains
- Joint dislocations
- Ligament injuries
- Muscle strains or tears
Braces / Boots
Support braces, range of motion braces, or walking boots can be fitted here following joint sprains, joint dislocations, ligament tears or tendon injuries. No referral from your treating doctor is needed for these.
If we suspect a fracture during our initial consult and you have not been to see a doctor we will refer you for an appropriate medical investigation and ask you to book an appointment with your local doctor. Depending on the severity of the injury your treating doctor will either give you a referral back to get an appropriate brace / splint or cast, or be sent to get an orthopaedic opinion. If we did not apply your cast you will need a referral from your doctor or orthopaedic surgeon for us to remove it. Once you have your cast removed we will offer you the appropriate brace, splint or cast necessary to restore your function.
We have the privilege of working with local orthopaedic and neurosurgeons on the Central Coast. We offer pre-operative management and rehabilitation to maximize your post-operative outcome and rehabilitation. Post-operative rehabilitation protocols are usually specific to the procedure and the surgeon carrying out the operation.
